Soon to be stranded at lunchtime in south Phoenix

I will be starting a new job soon, and the company is about to move to the Cotton Center, which is south of Broadway and between 40th and 48th Sts., technically Phoenix, but near Tempe. There does not appear to be anywhere to eat around the center, unless some of the other corporate buildings have cafes inside that are open to their neighbors. A fairly long walk would lead us to Taco Bell, Del Taco, and a Blimpie-type place. Many of us will be car pooling, so driving around the area to find lunch may not be an option. Are there any restaurants in that area who will deliver to us?

  1. Perhaps The Barbecue Company? I have been getting their St. Louis style pork ribs, and they've been moist and meaty. Other meats that I've tried have been disappointing, and the sides have been average - good.

    1. There's a second location of George & Dragon around there. You might try that.

Otherwise, it's a dismal area for dining. I work in the area just across I-10, and on days when I take the bus to work, I bring lunch with me. On days when I use my car, I usually head into Tempe.

As for delivery, I think that many restaurants along University and Broadway in Tempe will deliver to that location, but it will probably be viable only if several of you order from the same place. Otherwise, you'll have trouble meeting the delivery minimums.

Can you give me some names to try of those restaurants along University and Broadway? I live in Glendale and am not all that familiar with the area.

        1. re: kittyfood

          Mucho Gusto
          Oregano's
          Thai Basil
          Sacks Art Of Sandwicherie
          Cafe Lalibela
          Harlow's Cafe
          Lemongrass Thai Cuisine

Then, you get over toward Mill, and the number of choices explodes.

Adding to the places along University that are worth mentioning:

              Essence Cafe and Bakery
              Cornish Pasty Co.
              Rosita's
              Cheba Hut

        2. I work in the same area and unless you're into fast food (Jack in the Box, Taco Bell, Arby's, McDonalds, Whataburger, Del Taco, Burger King and Port of Subs within a square mile) it is hard to find a good lunch.

Dilly's deli delivers and I use them often.

I've also been to The Barbecue Company that johnseberg mentions and although I'm not sure if they deliver, the location isn't far.

I'd stick to bringing lunches to work with you and driving when you can with your carpool. There are tons of restaurants towards ASU area Tempe which are not a long drive.

          1. I used to work over at 52nd street and University and concur with what's being said here about needing to get over the other side of I-10...and then you have all kinds of options.

On days you do have a car or can put together a carpool you're also not too far from the Farm. I think they're closed for summer but should typically reopens in Sept.

If you're open to it, bus service is actually pretty good in the area and you can get to downtown Tempe relatively quickly. I believe there's a direct route from 48th st and Broadway to Mill and University.

            1. I work in the area so I’ll be watching this thread. I don’t have any suggestions for delivery and a lot of the good places in the area have already been mentioned but if you’re looking for something sweet on the way in to work or after lunch, I’ve enjoyed Honey Moon Sweets lately. They’re on Southern between Mill and Priest and have a nice little selection breakfast pastries and bite-size desserts.

              1. Others have covered University pretty well. Here are some options along Broadway:

                Lemongrass Thai
                Irie (Jamaican)

The Broadway bus route is #45. Unfortunately, it does not detour into DT Tempe and service frequency goes down to every 30 minutes at midday, so it may not be viable unless you have a long lunch hour.

I think the Guadalupe bus(92?) headsMill up to university and downtown Tempe from broadway? Don't know if that's a 15 or 30 min bus during mid-day. Some routes do stick to 15 min runs all day. best to check Valley Metro site.

Along with the others mentioned, I like the little Japanese place on University and Priest. I think it's called Tokyo Stop?

We also used to grab lunch at Casey Moore's....the patio was a nice spot in good weather and the burgers aren't bad.

Haji Baba and Khai Hoan on Apache aren't too far on days you have a car available.

                  1. re: ziggylu

I heartily endorse Tokyo Stop -- really good food but tiny, very few tables, like Stanley's on McDowell that way. Has anyone tried the Japanese bakery a couple of doors and parking spaces away, or the place up two more doors that has chesesteaks, pasta dishes, etc.?

                2. We had undeniably great burgers at Four Peaks Brewery in November http://www.fourpeaks.com. Their Reuben was darn goood too I thought.

                  1. Thanks, everyone, for your suggestions. I'm thinking that even if some of these restaurants don't have delivery service, we could send someone out for a pickup. I will be doing further investigation.

Don't forget you're also just down the road from Arcadia, such that dim sum lunches at Golden Buddha are a viable option; not to mention doing pickups from La Grande Orange, Pita Jungle, and Bertha's Cafe are also in the running.
