Grace, Wilshire, The Cellar, etc. Romantic dinner in LA

mh4e Jul 1, 2008 11:20 AM

I'm looking for a romantic restaurant with great food to take my boyfriend. I'm trying to decide between Grace, Wilshire, The Cellar, Hatfield's, Paperfish, or Palate Food & Wine. I know it's a lot of places to list but I could really use your help!! If you had any other suggestions I would love to hear them too! Thank you!!

Definitely Wilshire - on the patio. Most romantic spot in town, with fantastic food.

Thank you, I was actually leaning towards the Wilshire because of the patio, good to know the food is good too!

Can anyone give me any suggestions on what their best dishes are?

The Cellar has a great romantic, cavernous, old-school feel, where most (not all) of the men still wear coats/jackets. Great wine list, but just okay food. If you do go, get the Grand Marnier souffle; very delicious!

Thank you, I'll probably skip The Cellar then, I definitely want great food!

I'd say Grace or Hatfield's which are both very solid for food and ambience. Wilshire has a younger vibe, but the food is just alright IMO.

TracyS, have you been there recently? New chef.

Wilshire Blvd at 25th in Santa Monica. Haven't been back to it since the new chef, but heard bbq nights are more casual. If you really want romantic, I would go to Ortolan on 3rd in mid city. Phenomenal food, you'll probably have the place to yourselves, and all I can say is white leather & crystal chandeliers everywhere - sexy!!

                Wilshirerestaurant.com for the web info.
As to white leather & crystal - ymmv! Ortolan is wonderful food, though!!!
Wilshire is a good combo of both, especially on the patio. Make sure Matt Straus, sommelier, takes care of your wine needs. One of the best in LA County.

Second the nomination of Ortolan. It's very elegant, quiet, refined, and has wonderful food.

A second choice for me would be Sona. Surprised that no one has recommended it. It's great...also quiet, refined with excellent food and service, but with a more contemporary feel than Ortolan.

Yes I went very recently, and a member of my party was very good friends with Andrew Kirschner. The food was fine, don't get me wrong, but not remarkable. Wilshire would not be a special occasion pick for me, but I do like it for dinner on a warm night on the patio and drinks in their front lounge area.

Grace would be my pick. Great food and ambience. Plus, instead of getting dessert there, you can take a romantic stroll over to Milk Bakery and indulge in childhood sweets like ice cream sandwiches.
