Where can I buy good lobsters?

shuggielee Jun 30, 2008 04:58 PM

hi all. I'm from Massachusetts. I'm used to going to my local fish market where they buy the lobsters off the boats. I want to have a great lobster party this weekend, but need to know where i can get a quality lobster... any ideas? i live in Bay Ridge, Brooklyn, would prefer to buy from somewhere in Brooklyn if possible.

Peas,
Shuggie

Fairway in Red Hook has good lobsters, and they are on sale this week for $5.99/lb. They won't steam them at this price, I was told but still that is an unheard of price!

bkmasala- thanks for the hint, I have heard rumors of their super lobster sale. To be honest I have never been impressed with the quality of Fairway's seafood section (well, I can only speak for the red hook one from experience)... any other places you've bought from that you've been pleased with?

Just confirming this. Picked up a monster and can't find a saddle for it so I guess I'll have to cook it. The idea of a 3 lb. lobster for under $20 sorta makes my head spin. And there were some larger ones in the tank too.
I'm crossing my fingers that I can keep it alive until tomorrow pm.

            3165 Harkness Ave
            Brooklyn, NY 11235
            (718) 934-6300
The one in Island Park is the largest wholesale lobster distributor in the metro area.

              From the Jordan's website:
"Today, both locations continue their dedication to service and quality, operated by his sons."

So I assume the location at 165 Harkness Avenue, Sheepshead Bay, Brooklyn 718-885-2086 still exists.

We used to get a bushel of lobstahs from them every year to celebrate my FIL's birthday. They were always wonderfully fresh and delicious. Course that was a few years ago...

                The good 'ole days:
5 culls or chickens for $20 bucks. These days lobster meat is running about $30 a pound.

I went to Jordan's in Sheepshead Bay last month. Got a lobster roll which consisted of fresh lobster meat on a hot dog bun wtih a packet of mayo. Heavenly.

It's wierd though, how the address/contact info for the Brooklyn location is not on the site. I always get a kick out of the sales help wearing t-shirts saying "lobstertrician."
