Quickie Review! 2117 on Sawtelle

  • 2

Hi guys,

I went to 2117 on Sawtelle this saturday and had to do a quickie post.

Go there and have the soft shell crab special.
Well, it's called the Soft shell crab and risotto with arugala salad. I think it was about 29.95, and for that price you get two baby soft shell crabs very lightly battered in something like a tempura batter, deep fried, on a bed of dairy-less risotto and topped with an arugala salad. It's all bound together in a glorious harmony with a spicy sesame ginger soy vinaigrette. YUM.
The crab wasn't fishy smelling, not overwhelmingly fatty like some sushi bars can do, and soooo crispy! Well, at least the legs. The bellies were soft and chock-full of flesh, and the sweet kanimiso (the insides) paired so well with the vinaigrette.
The dairy-less risotto had a broth-based flavor and cooked al dente (wow!). Simply elegant.
And the arugala! I HATE arugala, but the ones they had here were not bitter, and the leaves were much... aesthetically pleasing, so to speak. I wonder if they used baby arugala?

The appetizers were awesome too, but you have to get the soft shell crab. Because it's seasonal, and I think the season is coming to an end. Now go!

  1. Sounds delicious! :) Thanks for the 411.

    1. Thank you for your review. You are right on the money with the baby soft shell crab dish, this is one of Mr. Mitsuno's stronger dish. I have eaten and entertained guests at 2117 for so many years, and all I can say is "I have never been disappointed", and my guests were always pleased with the experience.. In fact, his lunch prix fix ($17 or $18 - 3 course meal), is one of the best deals in town. I believe that he will sometimes have the soft shell crab as part of his lunch prix fix, with one piece of it and black rice rendition. This is a cozy restaurant, and you are right to say that he is a wino. I almost always bring my own wine ($10 - corkage ?), and share with Mr. Mitsuno. I wish more people will try this restaurant. If you feel the need to, you can call ahead and find out what the restaurant is serving for lunch/dinner prix fix. 310-477-1617.
