Brugge Beer Report
We went to Brugge on a Wednesday. This was a terrible, terrible error, as it is the day that 't Brugs Beertje is closed. Nonetheless, we did get some great beers:
De Garre (Brugge): This place was bizarre, but in a good way. It is down a tiny alley right off the main square in Brugge, so small it is hard to notice the alley. The place has 4 beers on tap and about 150 bottles. Classical music is played, newspapers are available, and glasses of beer are served on trays with doilies. There is a 3 beer limit per person per limit. We were the only people there (other than the waitress/bartender) who were under 60, except for 2 guys in their twenties who came in right before we left, and another couple who left right as we got there. All customers seemed to be elderly Belgian couples who came here to sip large glasses of fantastic beer while reading their papers and listening to classical music.
Arabier: (bottle) Des Dolles Brouwers. Tasty, but not sure how to describe it. Some spicy notes with a nice edge. I've since seen this at City Beer.
Brigand: (bottle) Castle Brewery, Van Hansbrouck. Very nice strong blond ale (9%). Weird label (odd picture of a brigand).
Tripel Van de Garre: (tap) sweet, but dry. Nice flavor. This was their house beer on tap, which seemed to be what most of the locals were having.
Boskenn Paasbieren: (bottle) Des Dolles Brouwers. hoppy, tasty Easter beer with a nice bite. Rabbit on the label looked like one of the evil Christmas critters from South Park.
Pilarbijter: (bottle) best label! (It's a man biting a large wooden pillar. Apparently, pillar-biter is a Dutch phrase meaning a hypocrite). Very refreshing with a nice bitter bite.
Hercules Stout: (bottle) nice stout, with coffee undertones.
Eramus (Brugge): - this is a nice hotel restaurant, with a modern feel and a great beer list.
Bornem Dubbel: (tap) solid dubbel. Not spectacular, but a good version.
Verhaege Blonde (tap) very tasty. From the makers of Duchesse.
Dertig: (tap) house beer of the Hotel Eramus. Very hoppy, but a bit one-note. Still likeable. Almost west coast-style.
De Rijck Trippel: (tap) Bier van Demaand. Very tasty trippel. Tiny bit of caramel, very smooth. Nice sweet style, with a good hoppy end.
