Blueberry Pie -- Mid-Coast Maine

The season approaches, so who's got the best blueberry pie? We'll be along the coast from about Freeport up to Camden. For some of us, a crumb topping would be a serious bonus.

On a trip back from Nova Scotia going to New Hampshire we stopped in Bar Harbour. After a dinner of clams my cousin's husband ordered a blueberry pie to split with me since I was too full to eat a whole piece. One bit told me all I needed to know and I was ready to spear his hand with my fork if he made another move toward that pie. It was that good! The restaurant was within walking distance of the docks and had heavy tourist traffic, sorry can't remember the name, but I never forgot the taste.

My vote still goes to the pie guy who hawks his wife's lard-crusted pies at the State of Maine Cheese store in Rockport on Saturday mornings. yum yum

Rockland has a pie thing going on at the various Historic Inns. The Inns in town have pie competitions, Pie-rades, etc. and are known for their excellent pies. Also a few of the bakeries and diners make good pie. Last summer the Food Network named Rockland "Pie Town USA."

Mae's Cafe in Bath, formerly Kritina's, is the only stand up blueberry pie I have every had worth eating. They also have a great wild berry pie but avoid the peach....
