Pittsburgh-Southside eats

As someone new to the Southside area and after searching these Chow boards, I'm still at a loss as to where the good food is.

Most specifically, pizza and Chinese. Where do you Southside hounds go in the neighborhood? Many boards have talked about Squirrel Hill, Oakland, and Dormont but any ideas where to go without having to get in the car and hit traffic? I'm not asking for much just some places or a place that makes decent stuff for a weeknight take-out. Thanks.

Pizza Sola (14th/Carson) is currently my current favorite. I used to go to Little Chicago -- they use a lot of garlic, if I remember correctly.

My other favorites are Dish (17th/Sarah), Cafe du Jour (great courtyard when it's open), Kassab's (12th/Carson) for their falafel, Mike and Tonys (15th/Carson) for gyros, Fat Heads for beer selection, Piper's for when Fat Head's wait is too long, Thai Me Up (19th/Carson), etc. The South Side has a lot of good neighborhood restaurants. Have fun exploring -- a please update us after you've hit a couple places.

Pizza Vesuvio recently changed their name to Pizza Sola and supposedly nothing else changed but the name. But, to me the pizza tastes a lot more bland and uninspiring that it used to. At one time it was on my list of top favorite pizza in Pittsburgh, but no longer.

Thanks for mentioning Kassab's k squared, I've been trying to find good falafel with no luck.

The sad thing about Vesuvio/Sola is that looking at the pies, they appear to be mouthwatering perfection. What was once oversalted is now simply bland. I so want them to be good because the toppings are good and the crust texture is better than most Pittsburgh pies. But that taste... or lack thereof.

As long as I'm on a Southside missed potential rant, hopefully Taco Loco will find it's way back to its former glory.

I haven't been to Taco Loco in about two years, sad to hear they're not what they used to be.

They just relocated back to Carson,,,forget exactly where, but close to the Birmingham Bridge. They have a $10 lunch buffet on Fridays, I think.

Just went to Kassab's, best falafel I've had in the city by bar!

Thanks to everyone for the input and keep it coming. In the few days we've been here, Thai Me Up has more than satisfied us twice. It is really good! Other than that, we've hit Fat Heads: unbelievable beer, still trying to find the right sandwich though, Cheesecake Factory: its right across the street, and reliable, but I hate going to chains.

I'm looking forward to Cambodican, that sounds great. Mike and Tony's as well.

anybody been to Michael's pizza? It looks promising.

The buffalo parmasean wings at Fat Head's are a must order every time we visit.

There's also a Primanti's in South Side. I'm a fan of their sandwiches and I think the South Side location makes the best sandwich out of all the locations I've tried.

Carson Street Deli has really good corned beef but it's been a few years since I've been there so I can't vouch for it now but worth a try.

Get yourself an Entertainment or Enjoy coupon book, lots of places in the South Side are listed with buy one get one coupons: Paparazzi's, 17th Street Cafe, South Side Steaks (philly cheesteaks served here), 1889 Cafe (really liked the amaretto trout), and UUBU6. I had an awful meal at UUBU6 but would be willing to give it a second try with a coupon. I wouldn't call any of these must visit places, but now that you live in the neighborhood and can eat there with a coupon they're worth visiting. I used to live in Carrick up until last year so I've had lots of chances to dine in the South Side. Now that I live an hour away I don't find myself returning to the South Side to eat, but there are plenty of good options there that you'll be happy with.

for "interesting" Asian take a look at Cambodican, a converted lunch wagon. not pizza or Chinese but Cafe Du Jour is good and Kessab is good Lebanese. you'll get plenty of other helpful responses over next few days
