Engagement party for a foodie with a small budget?

Hi All - My fiance and I are trying to have a small engagement party for about 30 of our friends. At this point in our lives, we're much more "foodies" than bar-frequenters, but we just don't have the money to take everyone to fine or even semi-fine restaurant. Ideally, given our budget we'd love to find a wine bar that would do a small party with wine and maybe a few light passed hors d'oeuvres for 2 hours after work. But even that may be too pricey. We're looking to spend under $1000. Any suggestions? Also, we work and live on the east side so staying east would be most convenient. Thanks!!

  1. i would look at fig&olive - they have some reasonable party group and room options. and i think you could just do a passed apps option there if you asked.

    1. We recently had a baby shower at Trattoria Alba on 34th & 2nd. We had similar requiremets to yours, good food large space, low price. The food there is great which is why we looked at it to begin with (our family is largely italian and can spot a bad marinara a mile away).
They have a private room upstairs and have very good dinner options starting at $30/head -it goes up from there when you include drinks. They're definitely worth checking out.

      1. I would speak to In Vinon, on 4th St. b/w Ave A and B. We did a bit more of an involved rehearsal dinner there for our wedding, about 30 ppl. Our RD cost more than that, but we bought the place out for the night, etc etc (plus it was our rehearsal dinner). It is a casual environment with superior wines at very favorable price points, and the staff will work with you to make it the party you want. Much of the Italian food is also excellent there. I cannot imagine that you couldn't do wine and some excellent apps for a few hours for 2 hrs for $1000 there. Call and ask for Angus.
