Columbia MO Bleu
Does anyone know the status of the anticipated restaurant BLEU, located near (or in?) the Tiger Hotel downtown? I don't think it has opened yet.
It is my understanding that the owners were trudging through the bureaucratic morass that accompanies opening a new restaurant, but that was a while ago.
The owners and chef say the week of August 18th. Much remains to be done, however; I don't see how they can do it. But that's their answer and they're sticking to it.
Just thought I'd chime in...
I really, really, really want to love Bleu, but I can’t. I’d eaten several lunches at Bleu and found they were good, but I felt like dinner would be the true way to experience the restaurant.
Dinner was okay. The food was good. Nothing about it was bad. But I did not feel that it lived up to the hype it has received. My spouse pointed out that I had made salmon the week before that was just as good as what he’d ordered. The fish that I had was fine, but forgettable (So forgettable, I don't even remember what it actually was). In both cases, we felt like our side dishes were better than the main part of our entrée. The service was also fine, but not exceptional. If we wanted something, like another glass of wine, we had to wave her down when she walked by. She never checked in with us between taking our order and bringing it to us, or after she brought it to us.
I would say that the food was on par with Tellers, but more expensive. I realize that a lot of people are anti-Tellers nowadays, but Tellers did have a heyday that was much better than it is now.
I would have been a lot more forgiving about Bleu if it were not trying to aim so much higher than it actually reaches. I know that people in Columbia are absolutely in love with this restaurant right now, which tends to happen whenever any place new and “upscale-ish” opens. But neither the food nor the service live up to what Bleu is trying to accomplish.
To sum up: Okay, but I’m not hopping on the bandwagon. Definite room for improvement.
