Bleu Squid, Mystic

A terrific new cheese shop/bakery/lunch place is now open in Old Mistick Village. Good selection of cheeses, and amazing grilled cheese sandwiches. They also do a "French Picnic" with two types of chees, pate, fruit, sliced baguette and amazing mustard. Their gazpacho is also very nice. There's a little bit of awkwardness in the service, but I think that's just starting up pains. They are definitely trying to please!

Old Mistick Village, right near the aquarium. I talked my husband into taking me there for lunch tomorrow...I'll let y'all know how it is!

Overall, I was very pleased with the food and the service. My husband and I both had the grown-up grilled cheese, which featured a blend of sharp cheddar, havarti, muenster, and fontina...delicious! We both had it on sourdough, but they offer white and multi-grain as well. My husband liked their clam chowder...it didn't look as thick as I generally like mine, but it had nice big chunks of potato and clam. We also split the French picnic...we were given a very complex blue cheese (a bit stinky, but very tasty), and something else which was promptly exchanged for an amazing brie after one of the ladies who worked there tasted it and decided the flavor was a bit off. I was pretty impressed by that. The picnic also came with a nice pate (though the texture wasn't quite as smooth as I'm used to), some green apple slices, a few baguette slices (not too crusty, which I liked), and a perfectly spicy honey mustard. We asked if they sold the mustard (and I don't think they normally do), but they happily packaged some up for us. I see some delicious baked chicken in my future. Anyway, we can't wait to go back. The two ladies working there were very nice, and very knowledgeable. There are a lot more things on the menu that sounded tasty, but we couldn't possibly try them all at once. Their potato salad and chicken salad both sounded excellent (yes, they have non-cheese options), and I really hope they have the lobster grilled cheese special the next time we go. I'd definitely recommend this place.

    2. my parents brought home a nice assortment of cheeses after a sunday drive to mystic. nothing earth shattering, but the woman (owner?) seemed to know her stuff and was repotedly very eager to please. they did get an absolutely delicious dry cured chorico from spain. i hope they do well there.
