cheap lunch in Garment District / Hell's Kitchen?

Just started a new job on 39th between 8th and 9th -- any suggestions for a cheap lunch ($5ish) in the (vaguely) immediate area? The more exciting, the better.

  1. There are a couple of those Chinese steam places on 38th by 8th Ave. I think one of them may be called Ying Du or something like that. You can get steamed buns filled with pork for really cheap or those rice plates with choice of 3 or 4 items for about $4. If you want a larger selection, there's Fay Da bakery on 34th near 8th Ave. There's also Pick-A-Pita where you can pick up some tasty falafel for $5. You've also got Macaron Cafe on 36th street for really good sandwiches. A bit more than $5 but not by much. And you're near my beloved White Castles on 8th. Not haute cuisine by a long shot, but can really hit the spot when the mood strikes.

    1. Hi: Might be a little out of your way but I always recommend Bali Nusa Indah on 9th between 45th and 46th Streets (Indonesian). Their lunch specials start at around $7.00 and are a hearty portion. You also have the choice of soup or salad and spring roll (check the menu, certain entrees only include the soup or salad). Ellyssa is Middle Eastern and is on 9th between 48th and 49th streets. Sandwiches are about $4.75.

      1. It might be a bit far but Kati Roll (sort of Indian burritos) on 38th b/w 5th and 6th is delicious and cheap.

        1. You should check out the midtown lunch blog for ideas too.

Plus - 'Wichcraft - more than $5 but delicious, is in Bryant Park, which is a nice setting for lunch.

That blog will have a lot of options to check out. You can also try Go Go Curry on 38th and I believe 8th (or in that vicinity) and Olympic Pita on 38th between 5th and 6th. Go Go Curry is very cheap and extremely popular. Also, a newstand style store has changed itself into an Indian Chat and Fresh mexican stand. It's on 6th between 38th and 39th. I haven't been yet, but I hear good things.
