Mingalaba lunch today
Palatha
Lap Pat Dok - Tea Leaf Salad
Rainbow Salad
House Special Noodle
Coconut Rice
Burmese Style Curry Lamb
complimentary Mango Pudding
Lunch for four, $60 includes tip.
The House Special Noodle is not to be missed, it's high on the Chow List.
This version of Lap Pat Dok is superior to any I've tasted recently at Burma Super Star, B-Star Bar, or Larkin Express Deli; each component is a bright burst of flavor.
Watch for Karen's delicious photos of a wonderful lunch!

Re: the tea leaf salad: I wouldn't have even known this was the same dish as ours, which had more lettuce than any other ingredient.
our Platha wasn't crispy enough for my taste either, though the curry sauce that came with it was tasty....

I'm not very familiar with Burmese food -- we went to Mandalay a long time ago and I don't remember it very well -- so most of these dishes were new to me. My favorite was the House Special Noodle. The noodles were cooked perfectly and the contrast among the textures of the al dente rice noodles, the crispy thin yellow noodles and the vegetables and chicken was really nice. The Palatha was good, but could have been fried in hotter oil -- it was a bit greasy and not crispy enough. I had never had Tea Leaf Salad before -- I liked it a lot, though, and it was beautifully presented as was the Rainbow Salad. The colors of this salad were just lovely and, although it could have been a bit spicier, I liked it very much. The only item I wouldn't order again was the curried lamb. It was dry and not very well flavored. The coconut rice which we ate with the curry was quite good, though. The mango pudding was very well-flavored but too thickened. All in all a very good lunch -- I'll certainly return to this restaurant.

At first bite, I thought the dish was one-dimensional - until Aurea tried the two condiments (a dry chili powder and a chili sauce) that accompanied the Burmese Curry Lamb... adding layers of tastes. More simply, the combination of the coconut rice and the curry sauce was heavenly. The lamb was dry, not due to over-cooking, but because it's so very lean... the lamb chunks were large and more than two-bites-full. The portion was generous - perhaps, your take-home leftovers will prove to be better in retrospect. I'd shred those lamb chunks or chop them in a small dice when you reheat this dish... and garnish it with cilantro and cherry grape tomatoes. I would order this dish again.... when I return to try the Pumpkin Yellow Chicken, next time.
