I have just moved to austin, and need to entertain some serious dining/foodies from NYC. I need the best steakhouse in austin, and a restaurant that has the best grown up ambience, elegance, and food. Many thanks for anyone's helpin advance.

For a truly Texas foodie experience you should consider Hudsons on the Bend. The food is spectacular and the focus on wild game is not run-of-the-mill. Another option might be Jeffrey's, which is of course an exceptional experience, but may not be different enough from their usual fare.

I went to Jeffrey's and was expecting more, the hype kind of ruined it for me.
The menu was very basic. My halibit was very bland and too wet.
My husband had the short ribs and enjoyed them though.
From what I have heard, I would like to go to Uchi and Hudson's on the Bend, for the next expensive dining experince.

For Steakhouse I like III Forks and in my opinion, Uchi is the crown jewel of Austin fine dining. Do a search for Uchi and you can read all the details from myself and others.

I pretty much agree with all this--Uchi is a must-go, Hudson's has a particular local flavor, and I would skip Jeffrey's, though it is clearly still a great place. One other fine dining possibility is Wink.

That said, you *really* ought to consider driving those folks down to Lockhart to try the BBQ at Smitty's, Black's and/or Kreuz's. Keep in mind that Smitty's and Kreuz's doesn't stay open very late (til 6pm I think). AND these places generally aren't great as far as sides. Don't even bother with any sides other than white bread, BBQ sauce, pickles and raw onions. These places serve WORLD CLASS BBQ, to take them anywhere else for BBQ would be kinda like going to Paris and eating at McDonald's.
