Anniversary dinner/poor/easy rez?

Hi all!

I've just spent 1/2 hour looking for appropriate suggestions in the past posts, but didn't find anything that addressed our situation exactly. Our 2 yr anniversary is this Sat. We're both pretty broke at the moment, but could spend up to $150 (including drinks) stress-free for a memorable meal.

I'm an unabashed foodie. I'll try anything once. He is generally easy to please, but doesn't care too much for classic french (he also doesn't like caviar/olives/raw oysters). Family just took us to Momofuku Noodle Bar and we both loved it. Yum yum, berkshire pork.

I'm looking for a relatively inexpensive place, romantic atmosphere, little problem with last minute rez, and a good menu with a range of adventurous to comfort foods. Also, we will be riding the metro to any of these places, so it's got to be within a short walk of a metro stop. I'm posting to the outer boroughs board because we live in Astoria (Broadway stop), but I'd be fine with traveling to Manhattan or Brooklyn (as long as it's not an hour long ride). Thanks so much for your help!!

  1. Try otto or Puttanesca for a nice Italian meal

    1. We had the omakase at Zenkicki for our anniversary dinner and it was awesome -- and very reasonable!

      1. Try this:

It's an excellent value for the money ($22.95 for three fresh pastas served tableside and includes an appetizer)

        1. As long as you avoid the bone marrow ($30 for an appetizer), you could probably do Allen and Delancey for that price, provided that you don't order very expensive wine. If you're really stuck to the $150 budget, you may have to share dessert. Atmosphere is romantic and the food is wonderful.

Perhaps a tapas place like Alta could also work for you.

And you will definitely be under budget for this one. Cafe Asean in the West Village can be romantic if you sit in the garden.

          1. Thanks so much for the responses! We opted to go to a movie instead and drinks afterwards. For drinks we went to Bemelman's Bar at the Carlyle Hotel. It was a wonderfully elegant experience and great for people watching. We both bought one drink each (at $19 per!!), both Whiskey smashes. They were well constructed and halfway thru we had a nice buzz. I'd def recommend for a special evening on a tight budget. It's a nice place for dressing up and feeling ritzy.
