Love Virgil's BBQ, so i second that. Also, Carmine's is family style, so is easy to do with a family.
If you want to go with Italian food (always easy to please the kiddies), i'd say Trattoria Tri Colori is a good choice. Since it's in Times Square, if you go after 7:30pm, it's rather empty and a bit easier to make noise, etc. and not feel like you're disturbing people. http://www.trattoriatrecolori.com/

My neice and nephew beg their Aunt Annie to take them to Carmie's whenever they come visit me in the city. I dont know if they love the huge platters of food- or the fact that I always order the Titanic dessert- which is a HUGE ice cream sundae. Kids always love good italian food.
I also had great luck with them at John's- great pizza, but not as fun an atmosphere as Carmines.

It would be helpful to know if these children are picky eater or budding Chowhounds. That said...
Virgil's BBQ, on 44th St., b/t B'way & 6th Av., is kid-friendly. Very popular, so reservations are a must!
John's Pizzeria is on 44th, b/t 7th & 8th Avs.
