Taking beautiful, sophisticated daughter to NY for the third time in October. Would like to eat someplace special in celebration of her 18th birthday. She enjoys fine dining and loved Balthazarr the last time we visited. Do not want too stuffy but something a little more refined. She is not afraid to expand her palate. Thanks!!

there are many options...Balthazar is one of my favs too....maybe:

-- 15 East...if she wants to try some stellar sushi, you could go there and sit at the bar in front of Masato-san...

-- Il Giglio is an elegant old-school Italian place in Tribeca...nice for a bday celebration...great wines, antipasti, caesar salad, shrimp fra diavolo...

-- haven't been to Gramercy Tavern in a long while, but have heard some recent fine reviews here...

Hundreds of other options too...any particular preference of cuisine?

Bar Blanc and Allen & Delancey are trendy places that attract a young crowd, while serving serious, innovative dishes, with refined service but definitely not stuffy.
