My favorite dishes @ Kingfish San Mateo

A recent trip to Kingfish has left me satisfied once again. The order of the Tuna Tare Tare was very tasty. The taro chips were great to scoop some of the tare tare into. Next was the roasted halibut. It too was very delicious. The highlight of the night was the order of the sea scallops. The carrot sauce that they complimented it with really added an excellent touch to the dish.

I threw in some photos for you all. Does anyone else have any suggestions of what to order at Kingfish or want to share your favorites?

  1. I found the atmosphere grossly corporate and the food dull/uninspired.

Ditto. And the oysters weren't properly shucked, which is a gross failing in my book, especially at those prices.

I have never had any quarrel with the food at Kingfish, though it can't compare with a SF restaurant. I can understand the complaint of a "corporate" feel, but there are few choices in San Mateo for this kind of place, though there is an overabundance of fine ethnic restaurants, for which I am grateful. But for taking out the more conservative diner somewhere in the area I prefer this over Capellini's, Viognier, or Central Park Cafe (don't even know if the latter is still around). And 231 Ellsworth is much too expensive and not worth the money. Kingfish is also housed in an historic building and the upstairs can be pleasant and quiet.
