Baron's Meat is gone --Star Grocery

I was at Star Grocery, Berkeley this afternoon. It looks like Baron's meat market is gone...the display cases were all empty.

We've got a new meat department opening on the 15th of July. Mike and Brian, the two guys who were running the place under Baron's will return. The new owner, Jesse, plans to continue the quality that was there before and expand the prepared foods and deli section. He's been in the industry for 20 years and is really excited about the new shop. We are too. Hope you come back in the next few weeks to check it out.

The guy who had been managing that market told me he was going to buy out the Baron's people and open that market up on his own. Here's hoping it happens!

I hope he keeps to the naturally raised, hormone and antibiotic free meats.
It would be nice to see better quality cured meats there as well, and more fish.
I always think that market has the potential to become like BiRite in SF, with the right management.

He was talking about stocking La Quercia domestic organic prosciutto, so I think he was the real deal.
