Return to Larkin Express Deli

After a 6 month hiatus from Larkin Express Deli, I finally got to return yesterday, since they are now open on Saturdays! I was very excited to hear this news - they are also open for dinner on Fridays and Saturdays (till 8 PM).

We had the tea leaf salad - just as good as always, with very little lettuce filler. I think there was a post a few weeks ago about the best thing to get for under 5 dollars in San Francisco - I think this dish is the answer.

Also fish cake tomato curry - The fish cakes were a bit tough, but the sauce is amazing. Still a wonderful dish.

Rainbow salad - More like a noodle dish than the equivalent at BSS, this was spicy and delicious. Both the rainbow and tea leaf salads had lots of crispy lentils.

Total bill was just over 20 dollars for PLENTY of food for 2 people. Awesome deal. I'm excited that this place will now be back in my regular rotation, and that people who don't work in the area during the week will now be able to check it out!

  1. On Wednesdays only, they have a biryani that looks delicious but that I haven't tried.

      That biryani is excellent--definitely worth seeking out.

      I still like the tea leaf salad at Yamo the very best.

      2. I went with David. The fritters on the rainbow salad are ridiculously delicious--I think this may be one of my top 5 noodle dishes in San Francisco.

        We also had a vegetable side--was it fried sour leaves, David? I liked the texture and hint of bitterness.

          The fried sour leaves (roselle, a kind of hibiscus) is one of my favorite dishes. The mohinga's the best I've had. I really love the hard-boiled egg sambal, too.

          Their tea leaf salad's my favorite, but they use a different type of la pat, pale whole leaves, which are quite different from the dark green paste the other Burmese places in town use. Sort of apples and oranges to compare them.

            Even though it's sort of like apples and oranges, I think it's still fair to compare, since they are two different ingredients in otherwise very comparable dishes. I definitely like the leaves they use at LED better - so the salad there is my favorite too.

        2. Had an excellent lunch yesterday at the slightly rechristened Burmese Kitchen. Had the chicken biryani and a small order of the tea leaf salad.

          Biryani was flavourful, the spice was just right, and the accompanying onion kachumber was a perfect foil to the rest of the dish.

          The quality-price ratio is just as outstanding as ever.

          I was overjoyed to observe the place was almost FULL at Thursday lunch.

          I hope they remain in business for a long time to come.
