Bacon Ice Cream Alert!

For all those Outer Borough bacon lovers (and really, who doesn't love bacon?), here's a heads-up.

One of Applewood's desserts last night was a deconstructed apple crisp with a generous scoop of BACON ICE CREAM.

For those who think bacon ice cream sounds weird, you can move along.

For those who drool at the thought of bacon ice cream, it was all that you'd want. Lots of applewood smoked bacon flavor that was perfectly balanced with the creaminess of the ice cream (gelato?)

I doubt this is a long-term thing (but it was new last night so it's probably around for at least a week) so call before you go.

  1. Funnily enough, that very dessert (with banana instead of apple) was featured last Wednesday on Bravo TV's "Top Chef"

it's also long a staple dessert of iron chef mike symon of cleveland's fabulous LOLA restaurant.

    2. I had bacon brittle with ice cream in Arizona a couple of years ago, and it really worked together. You really need the creaminess of the ice cream for bacon to kind of work in a dessert form.

      1. The fine line between rare phenomena and disaster is guarded by the idiotic sentinels of good taste.

Is there anything that does not taste good with bacon added?

Not that I've discovered thus far ;)

Thanks for the heads up Peter. I've been dying to have some bacon ice cream since the Top Chef finale. I've also been meaning to visit Applewood again, its been a while.

Bacon ice cream is nothing new in Chicago. Blackbird has been serving it for quite a while now. It takes like bacon. It was not my favorite.

And Fat Duck in the UK is famous for it too. I've yet to see it on a menu sadly. So I'm very much looking forward.

yeah, those suckass bacon chocolate bars. blech!

              1. re: TBird

Agreed -- those chocolate bars have such a light hint of bacon that if you didn't tell me it was in there, I don't think I'd notice.

Not true of the nirvana that was applewood's Bacon Ice Cream... every slow, savored bite was a loaded with the perfect amount of sweet, smokey bacony goodness. :)

I'm going for my anniversary next week, hopefully the bacon ice cream will still be avail!
