San Diego Chowhound spending first week of July in Ankeny running a wine competition In reading the Des Moines Register, the following places got very favorable comments. Can any Chowhounds give me their evaluations please:

The Corn Patch (Grimes)

The Radish (Grimes)

J. Benjamins

Chuck's Italian American Restaurant.

Thanks in advance!

  1. Ahhh, the Corn Patch! I used to live in Grimes and I"ve been there a time or two, however it's been about 14 years or so lol I do remember the warm loaf of bread they bring out to you with butter, and I remember loving the potato soup, but that's about as far as my memories go, I'm afraid.

    1. The Corn Patch is okay. Potato soup comes standard with the meal, and it is good and that seems to be the draw there. However, for a no frills Iowa steak experience, I would go to The Big Steer in Altoona. Just the best steaks and kind of a steal.
Haven't been to the Radish but I have heard good things. The Sunday night fried chicken is very tempting.
      J. Benjamin's is a little hit or miss. It's okay but you can do better. Since you are going to be in Ankeny, I would recommend Ranallo's on Third. Little local place, similar to J. Ben, with a nice atmosphere and good food.
Chuck's is old school Des Moines, been around forever. I would like to know if you are interested in the pizza, or Italian food generally. If it's more an Italian experience that you are looking for, I think you could probably do better. Des Moines has awesome Italian food, On the south side, the best are Baratta's and Tumea's. Latin King on the east side of town is a local legend.
You might want to look at www.desmoinesalive.com for some local restaurant info. There's web links to most of the restaurants and people can comment, for better or worse. :)
