Banks Beer and Flying Fish

It's been two months since my last visit to Barbados and am in serious withdrawl for flying fish, mac pie and a cold Banks beer. Anyone know of a restaurant in the GTA that serves up Bajan cooking?
Thanks in advance.

  1. There's Cajun Bajan Cafe in Scarborough...if you go, it looks like Friday's the day to get flying fish and macaroni pie, although it doesn't look good for the beer.

I just had the flying fish and mac pie special and it was excellent. Actually a friend and I split it along with an order of sweet potato fries, and that was plenty of food - although I definitely would have enjoyed more of the delicious fish, with a spicy, corn flake or maybe potato chip, coating. Excellent rum cake for dessert. My second time at this place and I definitely recommend it.

Thanks for that! I have to give them a try. One of the many things I wish I could bring back from Trinidad is Royal Castle's flying fish. So good!

      2. I can't really offer any advice about where to find the food, but I *can* tell you that you'll probably have a hard time finding a Banks Beer anywhere around here. Imports stopped a few years ago when a Canadian company licensed the rights to brew it in Canada for the local market, but when they went bankrupt a year or so later, the imports didn't start up again. I'm kind of surprised that it hasn't reappeared given the large Caribbean population in Toronto in particular, and there's a chance that some places might bring it in as a private order, but I haven't seen it anywhere in at least a couple of years.

        1. yes, i feel your pain - that was me a few months ago. there is no banks here, as the other poster explains, so you'll have to settle for a carib (and we've heard plenty of arguments in barbados over which beer is superior:)). you could get frozen flying fish at the st.lawrence market. pan fry the fillets and make your own cutter.

          1. Last night I was at the LCBO picking up our holiday supply of alcohol and discovered the store carried Banks Beer. Was so happy and I can't wait to drink my favorite Caribbean lager for Christmas. It's been a very long time since I had a beer from the West Indies. I want to crack one open right now, but I'll probably wait until the evening. LOL

Here's to the best beer in the world that originally came from Guyana and then migrated to Barbados and now everywhere. :)
