Hot Fudge Sundae - SD County

My sweetie has been craving a hot fudge sundae for days and this weekend seems to be the right moment to succumb and indulge. Now where? Where to go for a down home, old fashioned, delicious hot fudge sundae? We live in north county but will travel for the best (house made ice cream and house made fudge).

That's the first place I thought of for SD. We usually make them at home, if we have them at all, but I really like Sammy's version.

How about Niederfrank's?

Their ice cream is fresh and pure. I do think it is the best. I only get it from the store in National City.

I have never had a sundae of any type there-I think it would ruin the ice cream flavor...(I'm also not a chocolate person)

Funny - I've never had any kind of sundae at Niederfrank's either! Just their luscious flavors of ice cream. I have had Ghirardelli's hot fudge sundae, though, and it's very good.

Ghirardelli sundaes are indeed pretty good but the ice cream is not made on the premises. I was there having dessert one time and saw them carrying out a huge container of Dreyers from the back. Not that there's anything wrong with Dreyers, its my favorite store bought brand, but just an FYI since the OP was looking for homemade ice cream.

That's why I suggested Extraordinary Desserts. Their ice cream is made on premises, as are all the toppings. I think their sundaes are some of their better dessert offerings.

Only the Little Italy location as far as I know.

For an old fashioned sundae, my choice would be Ghirardelli's, creamy smooth ice cream and rich hot fudge, unfortunately it's in the Gaslamp. You know parking!

Housemade fudge AND ice cream is a pretty tall order - I would say Extraordinary Desserts in Little Italy (they don't serve it at the Hillcrest store) - or possibly Ghirardelli in the Gaslamp Quarter. I've also got a really good hot fudge recipe, adapted from Boulevard in San Francisco if you feel like making your own - it's super quick. Definite second on the ED rec. Their ice cream sundaes are incredibly good.
