Student Fare in Banner Elk

A friend's son is heading to Lees McRae this fall, and we'd like to set him up with a gift certificate to someplace he'll like to go in town.

Anyone locals know the best coffee shop? Deli? Sushi Bar? Other suggestions for a hungry (vegetarian) student on a budget?

If the Banner Elk Cafe is still there, they've got pretty good food and a HUGE menu. As far as vegetarian goes, from what I understand the best around is Angelica's on King Street in Boone.

Pappy's BBQ was pretty good for such a remote town when I ate there 4 years ago, and prices were reasonable.

Bayou Smokehouse does indeed offer gift cards that are good in both the restaurant and the adjoining Bayou General Store. The phone number is 828 898-8952 (I remember that because the last 4 digits are "TxLa").

I'm not sure, but Banner Elk Cafe may have some vegetarian offerings as well.

Bayou Smokehouse would be a good choice (if they do gift certificates). Cajun-esque food, student-friendly roadhouse atmosphere.

The other restaurants I've frequented in Banner Elk (Corner Palate, Sorrento's) are more pricey, I'm not sure he could get his fellow freshmen go to with him!

Um, I wouldn't eat sushi in Banner Elk. That fish has travelled a loooong way.
