Saw one on sale, a Cuisinart, on the Sur la Table's website for $100. Has anybody ever used this?

Or would it make more sense to use the perfectly good ice cream maker I have, a Krups, and simply spin it for half the time? But if I did that, wouldn't I have to alter the recipe, because wouldn't I get half-frozen ice cream instead of creamy soft-serve?

I don't have one, but from what I can tell this machine takes things one step farther than your Krups. Technically, most ice creams from a home ice cream machine come out about the consistency of soft serve (or maybe a little thicker) - certainly not as solid as buying a pint from the store.

So, basically, the Cuisanart uses a freezer bowl to churn ice cream (like your Krups) but it adds the novelty of dispensing it into a cone and allowing you to add sprinkles to your ice cream. You'll probably end up using your favorite ice cream recipes anyway, unless you used a soft serve mix (which you could buy separately).

If you want soft serve ice cream, buy a mix and use your Krups. If you want the cool swirl into a cone with sprinkles, then go ahead and buy the Cuisanart. Just know that the Cuisanart doesn't do anything to the ingredients differently than your Krups.

Yeah, if you look at Amazon reviews and such for that Cuisinart unit you'll see that it's possible to have the ice cream freeze too firm to be dispensed, in which case it's exactly the same as your existing machine. So no real point I'd say.

BTW, it's pretty readily available for under $100. Costco.com sells it for $70 including shipping.
