"Tex-Mex" and "authentic" is an oxymoron. But, El Fenix is the enchilada standard in Dallas. I personally like Luna de Noche for all things Tex-Mex.

I enjoy El Fenix as well and I really don't know why. Maybe it's because it was the first place where I "learned" to eat Tex Mex.
I like Luna de Noche too and Mi Cocina.
I don't like Uncle Julio's, El Chico's and Cantina Laredo.

Herrera's hands down. Best Tex-Mex.

I like the enchiladas at Cantina Laredo (several locations). And the fajitas at Uncle Julio's. Skip El Chico for sure. Luna de Noche and Mi Cocina are good, but the latter is overpriced in my opinion. I don't like El Fenix much.

No to Herrera's, yes to Luna De Noche and Mi Cocina even.

Two suggestions:
Javier's for classic continental Mexican (your guests won't be tired of the menu, and they will love the margaritas) AND/OR
Cafe San Miguel for just about anything. Order guacamole and corn tortillas (handmade, so they are slow getting to the table) even if you go for Sunday breakfast, which is divine.

Javier's has regularly gotten blasted on this site for good reason. The food is mediocre.

I'd vote for Mia's on Lemmon. Real, nothing fancy Tex Mex.
