In search of a reasonably priced pizzeria that is willing to substitute soy cheese for the regular heap of gooey goodness. Alas, my lactose-intolerant stomach can't handle real cheese, but I yearn for a hot slice of pizza piled high with delicious toppings. And in my mind, it just ain't pizza if it doesn't have cheese. Any suggestions?

I can't recall the name of it, but there is an Italian/pizza restaurant across the street from Burrito King on Sunset at Glendale in Echo Park. They will substitute soy cheese...if you bring it, I believe. They'll put anything on it as long as you bring it. You may want to call and ask if they have their own soy cheese now. Sorry I don't know the name...anyone have the name/address?

Anyway, you can't miss it if you go to that location.

Shambala's Cafe on the corner of Colorado and 6th in Santa Monica makes some mini soy cheese pita pizzas. It's a cozy little natural/organic restaurant. Personally, we think the best pizzas are the ones we make at home. We use trader joe's pizza crusts(in the bread aisle), smear it with garlic and olive oil, canned diced or sliced tomatoes, soy cheese, and a mound of toppings. Yummy!

In the San Fernando Valley there's Leonor's, a mexican/vegetarian place that has a non-cheese pizza.

Speaking of mexican, you could say that "Soy cheese" is a spanish translation of the book "I am the cheese".

We often order pizza with a friend who is lactose intolerant--in his case, he can eat goat or sheep's milk cheese but not cow. What he usually gets is a pesto and goat cheese pizza, hold the mozzarela, which they have a various places, including Farfala on Hillhurst.
