Easy "Home-made" ice cream

OK, I know it is probably easy to make ice cream from scratch, but my eyes glaze over since I don't own or want to own an ice cream maker.

However, I wasl looking at this recipe for Sweet Potato Ice Cream and all they did was blend canned yams with vanilla ice cream and put it back in the fridge to harden.

It seems like a eureka moment for me, an easy way to make my own fresh peach, strawberry, etc ice cream.

Does anyone do this?

  1. I've never done this before, but I definitely will now, especially with extra farmer's market fruits. Thanks for the link/idea. It's one of those forehead-slapping "why haven't I thought of this before" sort of ideas, haha. Also, this prevents me from buying yet another single-use appliance for my small kitchen.

      1. I think the only potential problem with using fresh fruit might be its water content, which could possibly make for less creamy ice cream with more ice crystals, but it's certainly worth a try!

        1. I make "makeshift" strawberry ice cream by freezing strawberries and putting them in the food processor with sugar, cream and a bit of lemon or lime juice - blend, and you get a delicious, fresh, soft-serve-ish ice cream. Replace the cream with sprite for more of a sorbet style.
