Where to find dried shrimp for cooking in Midtown

ironcheff Jun 18, 2008 08:51 AM

I need to find some dried shrimp, a Chinese ingredient i believe, in midtown manhattan. i work in midtown (46 and madison) and i am hoping to pick some up durring lunch in the area. if not, im thinking of stopping at katagari on my home (UES), but i doubt they will have it.

does anybody know of any stores/groceries in the midtown area (or even upper east side) that would carry those small dried shrimp?

They're more of a Southeast Asian ingredient, if I'm not mistaken, so you probably won't find it at Katagari. Unless you want to detour to Woodside, the only place you're going to find them is in Chinatown. You might give Kalustyan's a call though, since they sometimes surprise you with their random offerings.

You can find dried shrimp for cooking at the Japanese markets. They're usually dried sakura ebi. If you're used to the dried shrimps from places in Chinatown, you might find the Japanese ones pretty expensive, but you can use them for most cooking purposes.

I've bought them at Kalustyan, but that's a little out of your area. I can't think, off hand, of a place on the UES that I know has them.
