DB bistro modern on 44st between 5th an6th is a nice place. Go pre theater (42$) before 7pm.
Bar boulud on broadway and 60th st is really good (great charcuterie and wine bar).
try Bouchon bakery in the time warner center before 9pm. It 's in a shopping mall but the salad, sandwiches are tasty.
Benoit (55th at 6th) and brasserie Cognac (broadway at 55th) are new spots. They may offer good food.

I agree with the recs for La Bonne Soupe and Benoit, which happen to be on the same block, 55th, b/t 5th & 6th.

I also like Marseille, which is on the corner of 9th & 44th.

Tout Va Bien does not "va too bien" pour moi.

We've not managed to get to Chez Napoleon, on 50th, b/t 8th & 9th, but Hounds who've been there say the classic bistro cuisine is very good.

tout va bien is literally next door, with great atmosphere and decent admittedly not very distinguished food.
Marseille would be my pick for updated French in the neighborhood with a moroccan bent.

La Bonne Soupe for your basic, non-pricey, non-ostentatious. If you're looking for something a bit more, Benoit.
