Strawberry Jam [split from Ontario]

(Note: This thread was split from the Ontario board at: http://www.chowhound.com/topics/528758 -- The Chowhound Team).

Don't be afraid of making your own jam. I decided about 15 years ago to give it a try and it's very simple. Get the correct gear and the recipe in the Bernardin's box should work just fine.

I make the freezer jam and it's head and shoulders above anything you get in a grocery store.

Making jam really is easy. Just follow the directions precisely. If it says to stir for 2 minutes, stir for exactly 2 minutes.

Instead of Bernardin, I use Certo - low sugar version. Regular Certo/Bernardin use more sugar than fruit.

I used to make cherry jam every year but since I moved to Ottawa I have hardly seen any Ontario cherries and I don't like using the buckets of frozen (makes too large a batch).

I think I probably use Certo too. I've been using the same supply of jam for about 4 years now. I made a ton last time.
I also don't eat it as much as I used to.
