New holes-in-the-wall downtown?

OK, I've had my office downtown for 3+ years now, and while fancy new places keep opening, (and some close) the assortment of places where I can get I can get lunch for less than $10.00, regardless of atmosphere, doesn't seem to be growing nearly as fast. Leave out chains, and not much promising has gotten my attention in the last few months, though the $4 burrito at Guerrero's (9th & Broadway) was a bright spot.

So, south of about 5th, and west of about Spring, anyone been anywhere new that was worth the walk?

I think Ensenada on Spring around 6th or 7th is a steal for Mexican sit down lunch, almost 3 courses for under $10.00.
I agree Colori has upped their dinner prices but Lunch is still where it's at, you can still get Luigi's spaghetti and Meatballs for under $8.00
I also think Polloland on Broadway and Olympic is pretty darn good grilled chicken and they deliver.
Then there's Paul's Kitchen on at San Pedro and 10th, they have this Chinese bbq chicken that comes with rice and soup for under $9.00, old school Chinese diner.
And finally, I'm a big fan of the Sultan on 6th just east of Broadway, always crazy in there and packed but they have some really great kebabs with a daily fresh fish special too, under $9.00.
Quick question...I live at 9th and Broadway and the only burrito outside my door is tacos Mexico, where's Guerrero's?

I mis-spoke, mis-typed, or mis-remembered; Guerrero's is at 8th and Broadway; southwest corner. There's ANOTHER place apparently also called "Guerrero's" mid-block on 8th on the south side, which I have not been to, and which seems neither busy nor interesting.

They do a really tasty pollo burrito (the soupy-stewy-machaca-like stuff, no "grilled white meat") which I get w/no beans, no rice, add lettuce and pico de gallo. They're always pleasant, apparently amused when a "suit" shows up (hey, it's what I wear when I work, eh?) and tolerant of my lousy menu-Spanish.

As of last week, they seem to have gotten a "tortilla warmer", and are no longer microwaving the burrito tortilla; even better!

I ate lunch recently at Lime, the new place right behind Weeneez, and the burrito I had tasted exACTly like one from Chipotle, yet it was real small (about half as stuffed full) and was a couple bucks more expensive than one at Chipotle would be. And the people behind the counter were so lazy and unconcerned that I was pretty turned off by that also. Definitely not headed back...

Have you been to the alley/food court in the Diamond District? All kinds of ethnic holes-in-the-wall. Around 6th and Hill.

Dunno about "new" but right on the corner of 6th and Spring is Mai's Supertacos.

I ate at Mai's about a week ago. I wrote about it on my blog:

I had a great meal, and the proprietors were very welcoming. I would definately go back.

Loved this little stand!! Support them!

On Edit: OK - I can't figure out how to post a link on Chowhounds. My blog is

www.dove2day.blogspot.com and the post about Mai's is in the blog archive titled "Downtown Cultural Shift.".

Can siomeone tell me how to post a link on here?

            1. Weeneez, great hotdogs IMHO. 5th/Spring IIRC
            2. Colori Kitchen, 8th/Hope methinks
            3. Uncle John's Ham and Eggs right next to Colori Kitchen.

I'd have to disagree with ns1 on Weeneez, it's a bit overpriced for what you get.

Worth a look, however, is Lime, which just opened next door to the aforementioned hot-doggery. It's fresh pseudo-Mexican fare, think non-chain Baja Fresh, and fairly affordable at $6 for a sizable burrito.

Within the parameters you've set forth, I can only really give you places I'd skip...

I agree with the overpriced factor. Take that out though and I think they make a great hot dog.

You can definitely do 2 dogs for under 10 bucks. Alternatively you can go to the hot dog cart outside of Macy's for a $3 club dog :)

Colori Kitchen is really good. You can get out of there for $10, but getting lunch "to-go" allows for more choices @ $10. BTW- I went for dinner and it was excellent and corkage is free.

Been to Colori a bunch, and gotten delivery from there, both when they first opened, and when they "re-Italianized" their menu. Ate there last week, in fact. They're edgin' out of my price range.

Been to "Jewelry district alley"; the chow-spouse and I are semi-regulars at the Turkish kebab place all the way to the back on the right.

I'll go have a look at Lime.

                  So what's NEW?

Nothing. Nothing x2 at the < $10 price point.

There's that indian place that opened up a few weeks ago, haven't checked it out though.

If it's the Indian place in the underground mall that used to be the ARCO Plaza, I posted about it; it wasn't all that, though I'm told they've re-jiggered their menu. I liked "Lemonade", the "hip cafeteria" place roughly across from it, more, though frankly their mac&cheese isn't as good as Ralphs'.
