Where can I find the best burger on the Upper East Side. I would love it if they would deliver to 86th and 2nd

Thanks

  1. The best burger I have had recently is from Ottomanelli's - better than J. G. Melon, as are their fries.

The one in the 90s or the one on york?

      1. re: bryannyc

The one in the 90s - at Lex. Also, the burger at Square Meal is great, but I'm not sure they deliver.

      2. re: MMRuth

I had one again about two weeks ago - just as good - though rather amused when it came with some cherry tomatoes nicely arranged on the bun. The waitress thought I'd ordered them, when in fact I ordered the "sherried mushrooms". Quickly fixed and we all had a good laugh, but I wouldn't bother with the mushrooms next time as they were quite devoid of flavor, sherry or otherwise. The waffles fries are excellent, crisp yet chewy.

      3. I cannot vouch for it yet, as I am going to give it a try for my first time tomorrow or Wednesday, but I've heard some really good things about Joy Burger on 101st and Lex. I do know they deliver, and I'd assume they would make it to 86th and 2nd, but I'll give a report here after I eat there.

I'd also second Ottomanelli's as just a very good, reasonably priced restaurant.

If you are looking for a great "fancy pants burger" (as Ed Levine calls them), Cafe D'alsace is really awesome. He ranked it #1 for him, and I tried it and thought it was great too.

I'll second D'alsace. It's a bit pricey, but if you're looking for a gourmet burger, this might just be the UES's finest. Onions braised in riesling... yum!

After reading this post last week, I gave Joy Burger a shot last night. Very good! I love medium rare burgers, but I've found sometimes in the city ordering medium rare gets you a bloody slab of uncooked cow on a bun - so I ordered medium. Well I got a medium rare burger when I ordered medium, and I was thankful ;) The burger was really delicious (I got the Maxi because I was starving) - you can get a free pickle on the side. The fries are very fresh, crisp and pleasant - and gotta love the bottled soft drinks.

On top of that it's quite affordable. If you got a midi (5oz) and fries it'd only come to $6.50. That's cheaper than burger king or mcdonalds is in the UES.

I had a burger at Joy yesterday - thought it was very much on the ordinary side - though it occurred to me after eating it that I might have asked for it medium rare, which I did not do. The onion rings were pretty decent, though.

              1. re: Taylor.Watson

I'll vouch for it everyday of the week and twice on Sundays Too good! Choices of size of burger and sauces and toppings. Fantastic, make the trip! (I have no interest, affiliation or other with this restaurant or area)

              2. The burger at Uptown on 3rd between 88th and 89th is excellent. I don't think they deliver. Ottomanelli's and Cafe D'alsace are also very good.

yeah, the burger @ uptown is pretty good.i usually get mine @ brunch, but they are on seamless web if you wanna delivery.....

                2. 1. J.G. Melon's - one of my favorite burgers in all of Manhattan
                  2. Luke's
                  3. B. Cafe

I should mention Rathbones, too, even though I am not the biggest fan of burgers on English Muffins.

Ah, I forgot about Lukes. Good call. They definitely make a very good burger. It is a cash only place if anyone was wondering.

                    1. re: Taylor.Watson

                      Where is Luke's?

When I was at J.G. Melon's two weeks ago, the fries were pretty lousy. I liked my Bloody Mary though.

                      1. re: MMRuth

I believe 79th and third on the Northwest corner.

By the way, I tried Joy Burger on 100th and Lex tonight and it was pretty good. But not amazing by any means. It's great for the kind of place it is - which is ordering at the counter and then bringing your food to a seat type of place. And they have a ton of different options for stuff and sauces you can have on your burger. It's definitely a good deal for the price though.

                        1. re: MMRuth

mmruth-i third Lukes!!! very good burger-and like someone else mentioned-cash only

                          1. re: UES Mayor

I'm glad other people agree that Luke's burgers are delicious. I have ordered delivery before and they are still very tasty. I recommend getting the fries too. They deliver it in a paper bag. Yum.

                      2. The Wicked Wolf or Barking Dog. Barking Dog delivers and they have wicked onion rings. WW has a very retro vibe. The food generally sucks, but the burger is quite good. JG Melons sucks.

Cafe D'alsace - it's the best in the city...according to Ed Levine of Serious Eats

                          1. re: missbuilding

Barking Dogs burgers are "non-traditional" - served on focaccia (sp) bread, not a bun. They do deliver though. Starlight Cafe on Third has one of the better "diner" type burgers found in the area.

                            1. re: scoopG

I have not had a burger at Barking Dog lately but in the past I have asked for the burger on an onion roll instead of the focaccia.

                          2. I don't know if they deliver, but Soup Burg at 77th and Lexington gets my vote for best burger in the neighborhood. Fresh beef, patties made to order, well toasted bun, consistently well cooked (and they're not afraid to cook it rare).

Soup Burg does make a tasty burger - also a great chocolate egg cream just like they used to taste in the 1950's. I also like some of the wraps too.

                            2. I don't know about the other places but I loved Ottomanelli's (on Lex) burger. Burgers are my staple.

                              1. I really prefer Burger One for delivery but often comes overcooked, so order accordingly.

25 year UES resident here. It is amazing how opinions vary. I've been to all places mentioned here, and they all make good burgers. But only JG Melon makes a great burger. Been there hundreds of times. There last week actually. And no burger on the UES, or Manhattan for that matter, equals it. That said, it can be inconsistent. At it's worst it is a very good burger. At it's best it is a thing of beauty.

                                  1. re: Gossomer

I had both the Ottomanelli and the JG Melon ones within a short time of each other, and thought that the former was really quite a bit better, and the fries there were far better. And, no crowds and cheaper to boot.

                                    1. re: MMRuth

M - are Ottomanelli's fries of the cottage variety like JG? I prefer regular ol' fries!

                                      1. re: scoopG

They are waffle fries - and really, they are excellent.

                                2. Favorite burger on the UES is Melons but they don't deliver. I've had all of the ottomanelli variations, and while I agree its a good burger, after a while I just got bored with it and I certainly didn't crave it like I do for a Melon burger. As for Luke's, had one about an hour ago, taste like burger heaven with a little more char to me. Loved the fries though.

Maybe I just got a less than great JG Melon burger last time - will have to try again!

                                  2. Kinsale Tavern on 3rd Ave between 93rd & 94th

                                    1. Obviously -- JG Melons, but they don't deliver, do they?

I personally hate Jackson Hole but people rave about it.

I've had an OK burger from Burger Heaven....Uptown Lounge and Gracie's Corner are above average too. (all on seamless web)

Wicker Park is good, don't know if they deliver...

                                      1. I've been a fan of Soup Burg (77th & Lex), but just tried Ottomanelli's. Now I've now seen the light. Ottomanelli's has delicious burgers and fries! (Agree with MMRuth, Ottomanelli's burgers and fries taste a lot better than JG Melon's. They're also a better value.)

                                        1. I went to Ottomanelli's (93rd/lex) yesterday and while the burger was tasty, it was not what I had hoped for. I guess my biggest gripe was that I asked for medium and got well done, and it didn't have much flavor. the bun was great, and the garlicky butter that they dollop on it really added a nice flavor to the whole burger. The waffle fries were also well done.

That would bum me out - nothing ruins a burger more, IMO, than having it well done when you don't want it that way. Glad you tried it though! And didn't get any "cherry tomatoes" on your bun!
