Animal on Fairfax - anyone been?
Well I went last nite w/ friends and we all LOVED it! Had a Pinot Noir the sommelier (a funny and charming lad) recommended and it was yummy! I have to admit, I usually study menus but I ran in the door at 8 and my friends were already waiting at the bar and we were having fun and just rolled with it - so I'm just a little unspecific on all the ingredients - forgot to snake a menu! But it changes all the time so - roll with it, I say!
The soft shell crab reminded me of the big ol' ones you get in New Orleans when they are in season. Perfectly fried w/ an almost kimchee style of veggies accompanying them. The Petite Basque w/ chorizo...well, hello...lover! And the ribs - crazy good. We also enjoyed the shaved asparagus salad very much. The only app that didn't win over the whole table was the poke - it was an interesting harissa based sauce and I'm not saying it wasn't a good dish - very original - just didn't win everyone over.
For entrees I LOVED my mahi-mahi and the flatiron was tasty too! Who says ordering fish at "animal" is wrong?
Yes, the room is a bit loud but extremely convivial - or maybe that was just because we sat next to the lovely and extremely generous and gracious men of the Cheese Shop of Beverly Hills. Ooh, Michael the truffle man and Domenic - ciao ragazzi bellissimo!
And, yes, we had to do it, the bacon coated candy bar was devoured for dessert. It's the salty-sweet thing and it was good. Though we saw the crisp and the chocolate pudding going out and if going off to purge just to do it again were an option.....well, you get it.
Jon came over and introduced himself - seemed just genuinely excited about it all, very warm and gracious. And it's true, full menu til 2 a.m. on the weekends! Ok, I'll be the one at the bar surrounded by my newest and dearest friends: soft-shell, ribby and mon ami petite basque! Enjoy!
