A horrible experience at Kafe Yen in Pacific Beach

  • 5

Kafe Yen was a disappointment. I was excited about trying a new Thai restaurant tonight even though it’s not all the way Thai. First the waitress came and I asked her for her recommendation she said the yellow curry was very good so I decided to order it. I also ordered the pad thai with chicken two dishes that are pretty simple 2 make and most people know about them even if they don't much about thai food. We asked the waitress if we needed to order more she didn't understand the question and said okay order and appetizer and dessert she just didn't make sense there was definitely a language barrier. So my mom and I and one other couple were the only ones in the restaurant and the food still took 30 min to come
The first taste of the curry I had was okay but then as I went for another bite it tasted like dirty socks I'm sure a lot of you have had experiences like that its not pleasant. So I started to wash it down with water the water tasted like cucumbers I don't mind cucumbers but I don't think it goes with water. Then I tasted the pad thai it wasn't bad just had a little bit of and off flavor. Another thing that I immediately noticed was that the cup of brown rice they served wasn't even adequate for one person. We called the waitress over because my mom and I decided we were going to send back the curry and deal with the pad thai. The lady didn't understand at first that we wanted to send it back then she said let me check if we can take back dishes. In all the restaurants I have been to and I have had bad experiences I have never once heard that from a waiter or waitress. Then instead of her coming back this random guy comes over and asks again r u really sending this back. I said yes then he asks why I say because we just did like the flavor. After that he started asking me questions if I had had yellow curry before I said that wasn't the issue I just didn't like the taste. Then I said can we have green curry instead he says oh well if you don't like this one you probably won't like the yellow curry. After that response I said Ill pay for the pad thai but then I'm leaving. They didn't even bring the check to us they left it on the counter for us to go and pick up. Luckily karinya thai is literally 2 seconds a way. So my mom and I went there. The food was brought out in less than 10 min. I still think they have the best thai food in San Diego. I have never had anything like there pad thai or panang curry.

  1. I've only eaten there for lunch (and not in the past year), but I've had nothing but good experiences at Kafe Yen. Not a completely traditional take on Thai food, but quite tasty. Service has always been friendly, if sometimes a bit slow. Never had a language problem.

They have always served cucumber-flavored water. I found it initially surprising, but enjoy it.

After eating multiple meals at Kafé Yen, the cucumber-flavored water was the complaint I had about the food or service.

    2. Cucumbers in water can be found in spas all over. It is not unusual.

La Costa Spa & Resort uses a lot of sliced cucumbers with their water..

        Cucumber-flavored water? No cucumber slice?
I want to see the cucumber in my water vs. thinking my water is infused with some flavored crap.

I never said it wasn't unusual, I just don't like my water tasting like a vegetable but thats just me.
