I am going to be in Dubuque for a family thing too - guess there aren't any good restaurants there judging by the lack of activity here.....

Timmerman's Supper Club in East Dubuque is an old standby, room enough for a family gathering. For something fun, Catfish Charlies is along the River and family friendly. There is also a casino and dog racing park in Dubuque that have restaurants and places for family gathering. In Galena, Fried Green Tomatoes for good Italian food.

There is good food here; I just don't think many locals are on chowhound. There's a new restaurant in Dubuque in what used to be the Star Brewery..not sure of the name of it..that's been getting good reviews. There's also a microbrew in downtown Dubuque but, man, it's just not that good. And Silver Dollar, a Mexican place, is recently reopened, right down the street from the Pepper Sprout, which is very good.
Galena..I agree with Fried Green Tomatoes. There's also a pizza place. You may want to post on the Chicago board, as many from Chicago travel to Galena for a getaway.
