Taste of Little Italy - Cuban (?) stall

ggom1 Jun 14, 2008 08:09 AM

At the end of Little Italy near Ossington, in front of El Convento Rico and across from the Dominion, there's a food stall which has been there every year. It's the only reason I go to Taste of Little Italy, but I don't know what kind of food it is or where I can go year-round to get it.

I'm not sure, but I remember thinking that maybe it's a Cuban place. They have the option of grilled beef, or grilled chicken skewers also, but I've always gotten the pork. They have a large square block of pork to start off with (I think it's frozen), and they put it into a giant pan (like a giant paella pan) and then the block becomes smaller as it cooks in the pan and it turns into really delicious shredded pork. Has anyone tried this place, or know where I can get this type of food? They also serve the meat item with salad and some type of potato patty - the potato patty is like, if you took a lump of mashed potato and put it onto a solid surface grill because the outside becomes kind of hard and crunchy, but the inside is yellow mashed potato.

LOL I'm worried that one year the stall won't be there, so I figured I'd better seek an alternative supplier now.

I had a pulled pork sandwich from them yesterday and it was v. nice. The accompanying veg were just right and the sauce you add yourself was perfect. The man in charge told me he has a rest up at Oakwood and Vaughan, so you can ask him about it.

Oh, I didn't realize that they made sandwiches too. Was the sauce that super-spicy orange-coloured sauce?

This has been nagging at me since last year - we wandered the whole strip looking for that stuff when we saw people wandering around with it. I don't remember a lot of specifics, but just remember thinking that the meat, the hot sauce, and the salad and such that came with it just really hit the spot. If anyone knows where this restaurant is, I'd LOVE to know.

I rode by La Fiesta on my way home this morning, they're at 503 Oakwood Avenue (right where Vaughan and Oakwood meet on the northeast corner). Their hours (according to the sign in the window and if my memory serves me correctly) is Monday to Saturday from 11 to 8, closed Sundays. Best to call and confirm (416) 652-6671. I'm hoping they sell that sauce by the jar, it's darn tasty!

Are you talking about La Fiesta? There is a thread with a description here, and it sounds like you're talking about the same people: http://www.chowhound.com/topics/421441

If so, they are Ecuadoran, not Cuban.

That totally sounds like them! Hmm, wonder if they're at Nathan Phillips Square on Thursdays this year too. Definitely worth an excursion.

Nathan Phillips is on Wednesdays. Metro Hall is on Thursdays. They're not at Metro Hall this year. Perhaps someone who's been to Nathan Phillips this year can confirm whether they're there or not?

Nathan Phillips doesn't start until next week...don't go today or you will be sad!

Actually, La Fiesta will be at Nathan Phillips Square on both Fresh Wednesdays and Tasty Thursdays this year... both starting next week!
