Relatively cheap dinner for 40 people?

I work for a science blogging network which is having a meetup in August, so everyone can meet face to face and gossip about thrilling science happenings in person. On Friday night when they come in (August 8) we'd like to have a dinner somewhere in the city before karaoke or whatever other activity ensues (scientists singing karaoke...yes, terrifying).

There are going to be about 40 people in total, maybe slightly fewer, probably not any more, and while it's a pretty diverse crowd I think everyone is pretty open to various dining options.

We'll be meeting at our offices on 21st street (at 5th Ave.) and it would be nice to be able to walk or take a short train ride to the restaurant, but we're open to pretty much anywhere in the city- not trying to wrangle 40 out-of-towners into Brooklyn.

We were thinking maybe some kind of Indian or Asian restaurant would be fun, but these places tend to be smaller. Does anybody know of any that could accomodate a group of 40? Of course, any kind of cuisine would be fine, we're open to all suggestions.

Since we are but a small company working on a fairly limited budget, we'd like to keep the price somwhere under $50 a head for dinner, tax and tip, and maybe one drink (though drinks will probably end up being on the bloggers themselves).

Thanks in advance for your suggestions!

  1. Hi. Japas 38 includes food & drinks PLUS Karaoke for $40 inclusive for 2 hours. (It says 35 max, but I bet they would squeeze in the other 5).

    1. Hey, Olallieberry,

I recommend you contact Campanile, on 29th St., b/t Madison & Park Av. S. Excellent traditional Italian fare served in very pleasant surroundings by a friendly, efficient staff. I'm sure the owner, Slavko, will work with you to put together a package for your group which meets your budget. Tel.: 212-684-4344.

      1. Thanks, those are both great suggestions!

        1. Just go to the Madison Square park and have great burgers and shakes at Shake Shack! Great for summer outdoor.
