Breakfast & Casual BBQ/Steakhouse Suggestions in Phoenix / Scottsdale?

Hello, a group of ten of us in our early 30s are heading from Los Angeles to Phoenix for the first time in a few weeks for 3 day vacation. We are looking for places to eat in either Scottsdale or Phoenix. We are staying somewhere close to Phoenix airport (Arcadia?) and have a rental car so we don't mind driving.

1. Any suggestions on where to go for breakfast? Some people had told us about the Breakfast Club or Taylors. It would be great if you can provide some input on these places or other alternatives.

2. Can we get some suggestions on a casual steakhouse or BBQ place (no Mastros, Ruth Chris, etc)? Looks like Don & Charlies is a suggestion brought up in the message boards.

3. Any other casual American / Traditional cuisine spots that are a fave for locals / foodies?

What we prefer . . .
1. No chains
2. Good food
3. Enough space to fit 10 people
4. Where the locals / foodies go
5. No dressy or upscale fancy places (i.e. no Mastros type of establishments)
6. People watching - optional

  1. Breakfast/Lunch/Dinner - Le Grande Orange, although it may be sketchy for a large group due to sheer volumes of people. No steaks.

    La Grande Orange Grocery
    4410 N 40th St, Phoenix, AZ 85018

    1. Le Grande Orange is too hectic for a group of 10 and the food is not that great. I would try Chelsea's Kitchen (their sister restaurant) Breakfast Club is good - go early because it get's packed. I really like my Florist Cafe located near the Historic DIstrict in Phx. I also love Richardson's for a New Mexican style breakfast (it's a local favorite) or The Hermosa Inn which only has brunch on Sundays. (Richardson's)

I would check out Breakfast club for sure- really good iced coffee called the BC. can also hold a grp of 10.

The Vig is a cool bar/restaurant on 40th and indian school Sundays are supposedly really fun and my have brunch/bkfst. Live band and outdoor patio. call and check.

Overeasy is next door to the vig and I really love their bkfst but they are a small place call and see if you guys can reserve 2 tables of 5?

La Grande is GREAT food sorry to bizzlewillits is is awesome and fresh.

BBQ and steak is a tough one. I really only know of the pricier locations. But at the princess resort is a new steak place bourbon steak is doing a sunday special for $40 per person Check it out I think it is a buffet or all you can eat high end style.

Also Wallys in arcadia does a sunday BBQ.

I will try to link you everything I mentioned. Enjoy!!!

I can walk to My Florist and still won't go - very uninspired food and apathetic service.

I will agree with Richardsons, though.

          1. re: mamamia

add me to the list of my florist nay sayers. the only time in my LIFE ive ever not tipped.. the only good thing about my florist is the pianist.

            1. re: winedubar

I had a really good server's experience at My Florist. We brought our then 9 month old son with us. All though they didn't have an infant's seat, no one complained when we positioned our rather large stroller in a throughway. The waiter was really nice to us and our son.

Then again, the price didn't really fit the food served.

            2. re: mamamia

We're on the same page here. :-)

In my opinion, My Florist is barely a restaurant. Richardson's, on the other hand, is definitely worth checking out; though, I'm not sure how easily they can accommodate a party of 10.

              1. re: hohokam

Richardsons and their sis spot up the street, the Rokerij have cool private rooms for parties that size. Food is almost always excellent and I have been to both dozens of times.

              2. re: mamamia

                J. and I found the food at My Florist rather bland, uninspired and expensive. Richardson's would always be a choice over My Florist. Hands down.

            3. Honey Bear's on Van Buren is good barbecue and not too far from Arcadia and the airport.

Durant's is a Phoenix classic. People say the steaks aren't at the Mastro's level, and that may be true, but it's still good food in a retro-chic setting. The waitstaff wear tuxedos, but most customers are pretty casual.

The Stockyards is another Phoenix classic. It's a steakhouse near the Airport with moderate prices compared to Mastro's and a bit of local history.

2611 North Central Avenue, Phoenix, AZ 85004

              Honey Bears Barbeque

              5009 E Washington St Ste 115, Phoenix, AZ 85034

              1. for the bbq - i'd go to staceys - its really wonderful and on about 16th street and indian school. part of their family also runs lo lo's chicken and waffles - you like roscoe's in la? come to lo lo's ;)

matt's big breakfast isn't too far from you, altho i'd be wary of the time - there can be a wait - outside no less, and its summer. but the foods great..

i can't say enough good about richardsons - the food is amazing. breakfast, lunch, dinner, just give them a go :)

Great suggestions for breakfast! I checked out the menu for Richardsons and now I am craving it. We will most likely go there since you guys all speak highly of it and a "no" go for the Florist Place.

Matt's Big Breakfast looks really good but since the place is too small and has long waits, we probably will stop by Breakfast Club.

For BBQ or Steakhouse, all the recommendations look good so haven't really decided on where to go . . .

                  1. re: rhung101

I'm coming back to emphasize a visit to Richardsons even more. If you head to Dick's Hideaway, which is Richardsons Lite just around the corner, they have the nice big table in the private dining room. They should be able to accommodate you walk-in group without a problem for brunch.

Or...don't worry about finding Dick's. If you speak to the hostess at Richardsons, she will immediately send you over there with your large group.

                    Carne Adovada y que!!

Yes I would go to Stacy's as well - drive under the 51 on heading west Indian School and you'll smell it; great ribs, pulled pork, fired catfish, etc.

Local joint for coffee and a bagel - Mama Java's on 36th St/Indian School.

Breakfast - go to Phoenix Ranch Market for breakfast, it's a great way to start the day.

                    Phoenix Ranch Market III
                    1602 E Roosevelt St, Phoenix, AZ 85006

                    Stacy's Smokehouse
