Westfield Mall Food Court - what's good?

Absonot Jun 12, 2008 02:21 PM

I need to get dinner downtown tonight and I usually go to Out the Door, but they're closed right now due to the flooding.

Does anyone have a good alternative? I'm looking for something to go, that's on the healthy side. I was just going to try the SF Soup Co., but I'd hate to miss out on something good.

Mr. Hana's Tuna Bowl (is that what it is called?) I love it.... Rice, raw toro, slivered apples, pickled ginger, a bit of seaweed, cucumbers and other veggies, sesame seeds, tons of other things, and a great dressing. HUGE and healthy.

i agree. excellent! switch white for brown rice for 50 cents.

i ate in that mall for several weeks on end during finals, so i tried pretty much everything there. the ahi poke tuna bowl is the best thing there... worth even getting at a real (though inexpensive) restaurant. i love the healthy serving portion of wakame. i would skip the cucumbers though; they are almost kim chi style and throws off the balance of the bowl i think. get more wakame.

my other suggestion is the fish and chips from pacific catch isle. not nearly as healthy, but very good and freshly fried to order.

The restaurant is called Mr. Hana? Where is it? This sounds good.

I understand that, I was looking for a little more specificity such as, next to Beard Papa or whatever. I've never noticed the place which is why I ask.

In the length of the food court, Mr. Hana is at the end opposite from Out The Door, near the skewer place and next to the cookie joint.

Here's the Place record for Westfield Mall with a link to the website which will show you where it is located in the mall.

I've been happy with the Korean place (Sorabol) and the Thai place (Coriander). Neither is the best in town, but both are far better than a food court needs to be.

Also -- if you're the sort of person who can make half a meal out of dessert, you could eat lightly at one of the mentioned places and then go upstairs for Cocoa Bella's hot chocolate. I think theirs is the best in town.

I think Sorabol wins on quantity, and for that reason seems to be the biggest draw.

I really recommend Out the Door, although they temporarily closed due to a leak... not sure when they're planning to re-open. I echo the sentiments about Corriander and Sorobal. Not great, not awful. I've also had good luck at Bristol Farms with paninis and such.

'wichcraft has interesting and tasty sandwiches, soups and salads. Entrance is on Mission Street, just past Bloomingdales.

Has Wichraft gotten better? Initial reports were mostly pretty negative.

I've been going to 'wichcraft on a fairly regular basis since they opened, and always that it was good quality. Of course, for the longest time I was stuck on the fried egg sandwich, so other things that I hadn't tried at that point may have been lacking. I also think at the beginning there were a lot of people chomping at the bit to rag on the Westfield food choices, in general.

The one big improvement I can think of is that they started including a bag of chips with your sandwich.

'wichcraft is a good idea. I often forget about it since it isn't in the actual food court. It has gotten better since it first opened. Several options on the healthy side, and the prices are quite reasonable. Not as good as Out the Door, but a good runner up.

I have seen a definite improvement in 'wichcraft'...

                      LOL...

Thanks for all the suggestions! I ended up doing the spicy tuna bowl at Mr Hana, and it was delish. I will go there again and definitely get the brown rice. The people who work there are very friendly too, which is always nice.

Out the Door is indeed still closed up, btw. I meant to see if there was an opening date posted, but forgot.

And I'd love to have grabbed something from 'witchcraft, but they close too early for my schedule.

Glad you found Mr. Hana and that you appreciated the Poke Bowl. I've tried a few of the other establishments and always end up wishing I had just stuck with my usual fav!
