Steamed crabs in Richmond?

agoldman Jun 12, 2008 09:49 AM

I'm a Baltimore native who just moved to Richmond, VA. Now that it's summer, I'm really starting to miss steamed crabs with Old Bay (and Natty Boh beer, and O's games...). Does anyone know of a restaurant in the city that serves steamed blue crabs, or a good seafood market that will sell me live ones?

let us know what you find/do!

my husband likes anything steamed in old bay. shackleford's (in the west end) does their shrimp like that but i don't know of any place that does crabs.

Call the Crab Lady. She is take out only, but cooks them to perfection with lots of seasoning and they are hot and ready to eat. She has really good prices also. Place looks awful, but don't let that fool you.

That sounds promising! The best places for real seafood never look very pretty. In Baltimore, we get our crabs live from a guy who sells them out of a truck on the side of the road. I'm definitely not picky about ambiance where steamed crabs are concerned!

It's off Nine Mile Road near Glenwood Golf Course.

That's so funny. I just drove by there earlier this week and wondered about it. I'll have to check it out!

I got some steamed crabs this weekend from Hastings. They were great quality, and a good price, but they don't steam them with spices. I poured a combo of Old Bay and ground mustard over them (the spice mix they gave me there was too salty in my opinion), and they were just fine. The woman helping me said to call Thursday or Friday, and they might be able to set aside some live ones for me. I'll certainly go back for those, and I'm looking forward to trying the Crab Lady as well!

I am also a Baltimore native and Love my steamed crabs this time of year, I have 2 places that I have found that have really good crabs. 1 is Gabbys Seafood in Ladysmith VA - 540-846-3367 and the 2nd is Arnest Seafood Rest.804-769-3315, in Manquin VA (this one is heading towards tappahannock on 360 (mechanicsville turnpike). I have had steamed crabs from both places and both are awesome and they will do ALOT of OLD BAY seasoning if requested. Hope this helps. ENJOY
