Good Eats in Columbia Heights, MN?

Made you look! Seriously, folks, there's a good ice cream place up here called Grandpa's. Grandpa himself hand packs the pints. I am hoping that he will adopt me some day. The ice cream has a high percentage of butterfats and thus is super smooooooth.

This isn't a place with crazy flavors. Just traditional and they do them very well. Our favorites so far are the malted vanilla (yes, you got it, malted milk balls crushed into premium vanilla ice cream) and the basic chocolate. Hubby likes the strawberry but I found it a bit too sour. Brownie something or other just had too many different flavors going on.

Anyone else been here?

  1. No, but I will check it out.

What's with all the Indian restaurants on Central Avenue being closed on Tuesday? My vegetarian son and I were looking for Indian food on Tuesday and found that the Hyderabad House, Bombay II Deli, Chutney Bistro and Nala Pak were all closed. The only open place was The Vegetarian, and that was just creepy.

    So, two questions -

Is there something ethnically important about Tuesdays?
Is the Vegetarian not as weird as it seemed?

I've noticed that most Indian restaurants are closed Tuesday. My best guess would be that there is some sort of religious reason. The only thing that I was able to come up with doing a quick internet search is that in Hinduism, Tuesday is a typical day of fasting set aside for a Hindu God of trickery.

What was it about The Vegetarian that seemed creepy? It seems that I've seen it spoken about once or twice, and in good terms, but that was a while ago. Did you end up eating there?

Try the lunch counter in the back of the South Asian Grocery store behind the US Bank just south of I-694. It's pretty good.

And Dong Yang is in Hilltop which is basically Columbia Heights.
