a nice early evening at Sabroso in Rhinebeck

I had bumped into the owner of Sabroso a few days back and when I asked if his restaurant was child-friendly (we have a 2 year old), he was so nice and welcoming in his reply, we decided to try it with the tyke this evening. We didn't have a full meal so I can't offer a full judgement but we did have a lovely time. The place was a little bit empty -- good for us since we didn't have to worry about the tyke disturbing other diners but not so good for the restaurant which we now feel deserves patronage.

The waiter was really nice and helpful -- and patient with the child.
Bread -- baked there -- was great.
We had 3 tapas -- a plantain and other veggie chips dish which was really good and not greasy as it could potentially have been; a rice-and-ham stuffed calamari which was fabulous ; and arepas (3 kinds -- mushroom, beef, and avocado) which was quite nice but not as memorable as the calamari. Previous posts had said the portions were small but we didn't find that to be the case. And the wine pours were very generous.

As I say, I think this place deserves patronage and should be on the radar more of people in the Rhinebeck area. I like Gigi's or Terrapin or Starr's Place (a little less so) as much as the next person but Sabroso -- at least in what we had -- did not seem any less worthy of attention than places like those.
