Tomato Fresh Food Cafe, Vancouver

I did a search and can't find any entries on this resto, which seems odd but then again my searching skills leave something to be desired. I went once years ago when the resto was on Cambie and recall it being quite good. When it moved to Kits I was psyched as it's only two blocks from home. Took Dad for breakfast a while back and was disappointed. Overpriced for what you get, service issues, strange polenta cakes grilled to scorch marks, no jam with toast, no coffee refills, food was generally unremarkable, room seems a bit contrived and chain-y -- haven't returned. Just found out that my SO took HIS dad there for dinner before a Canucks game a few months back and they were underwhelmed -- the app was decent but the mains (pasta) were very average and the dessert "bad" (and the SO is not one to complain about food, unlike yours truly). He was wondering if he ordered wrong. What say you, fellow 'Hounds? Has anyone been to the new location and have better, more up-to-date input? Anything on the menu (day or night) that you recommend? We would love to go back as it's so convenient but need your help before parting with our hard earned shekels :-).

I have to say that "underwhelming" and "average" are the only epithets that need apply. Sorry, can't make any recommendations.

I remember being underwhelmed even waaay back when it was on Cambie. With so many good places to eat in this town, I think your shekels can go somewhere else.

I've never been there, but my wife was once a few years ago on a visit to Van. and liked it enough to buy the cookbook - just for the turkey burger that she had. It is a great burger, with pine nuts, apricots, curry powder...always a hit when we make for friends.

too bad to hear it's not the same in the new location - we always meant to get one of their picnic take-out meals but never did...do they still do that?

went there with some out of town relatives and decided to go there since I could tell them exactly how to find it (straight down Broadway for about a half an hour turn left)
Went for brekky, they are all coffee drinkers and I am not so I asked for tomato juice. Wait for it. They did NOT have any!!!!! at a place named TOMATO!!!!!! Argh.
Brekky was ok. My now Chowish relly's loved it however.

I do however like the moroccan turkey burger.

Reminds me of the Monty Python Cheese Shoppe sketch.

I have the cookbook too but have yet to make anything from it. Thanks for your input, 'Hounds. Not feeling the love enough to return despite the convenience -- the no tomato juice story kinda sums it up for me :-).

make the turkey burger. Really easy - all you do is throw the ingredients in a food processor - and super tasty. And I highly recommend the cider vinegar/mayo/curry powder mixture they suggest for it.

Cambie location: They once served me a warm berry smoothie and gave me so much attitude when I told them I would like it made with ice. Did not care for the food either.

Went there for brunch a while back (less than a month) at the Kits location and i was disappointed. Not only in the service but the value and the taste. I am not going back. Going to do the Social brunch next.

I ll get the pics off my phone camera soon and get it up on

Thanks, guys. I'm really not seeing my way clear to putting Tomato back on the list, despite it's proximity...
