Great Pie between MSP and the Wisconsin Dells

Dulcie Mainwaring Jun 10, 2008 07:46 PM

I've been told that the Park Cafe in Braham, MN is the place for pie in the area. Yes/No?

Braham may have great pie, but it's more on the way to Duluth than on the route to the Wisconsin Dells. At 78 miles from the airport, I'm not sure the pie is worth going that far out of your way to eat.

For great pie in the Dells, go to the Cheese Factory.

P.S. I've added two Places links, because one has more links but the other has better information. Also, the Places feature doesn't seem to know which city the restaurant is in - it's not in Baraboo OR Wisconsin Dells proper; it's technically in Lake Delton.

I assume you are driving. The traditional (at least for me) pie stop between MSP and Madison was the Norske Nook in Osseo, just south of Eau Claire on 94. I haven't been there in 10 years and I thought the diner food went downhill when they opened their "second" restaurant across the street from the original in the early 90s. (It's not that the new place was bad - just very pedestrian and built for tourists. The earlier incarnation was much more classic midwest diner food.) But I think the pie is still pretty good...

Ditto for the Nook -- great pie, indifferent-to-bad food.

I haven't had pie at the Cheese Factory, but I wholeheartedly endorse it for great food, ice cream desserts, and friendly atmosphere. Plus, free wi-fi!

Be careful on your way to the Dells. Major major flooding in the Lake Delton area. In fact, Lake Delton now covers most of the Lake Delton area.

The Norske Nook has a strong reputation and following. But if you can make it all the way south to Madison, the Market Street Cafe (technically in Sun Prairie, but easy to get to from the Interstate) has fantastic pies in actual glass pie plates.
