Report: Fu Yuan (Summit Garden)

One of my dinner groups dined at Fu Yuan this evening, after having been told it had some of the best Peking Duck in the city.

We ordered a Duck dinner for 6, which came with 2 courses of duck, filet of grouper with baby bok choy, a spicy pork dish, a winter melon dish, and a crab dish and the daily soup. We ordered another vegetable -- sauteed snow pea leaves, as well.

The daily soup was a rich pork broth with wonderful flavour and an interesting hint of sweetness.

Immediately after the soup, the first of the duck courses was served -- crispy skin and pancake with sweet bean sauce. I'm not sure if it's the best in the city -- I haven't tried all that many -- but it was certainly very, very good. Especially impressive was the attention paid to the accompaniments. The sauce had more depth of flavor than I normally find, and the pancakes were much better than average, as well. I was sort of hoping there might be more pancakes than duck, just because I wanted to eat a couple on their own, but alas, they had perfectly matched slices of duck to number of pancakes.

The remainder of the duck was served mixed with vegetables for lettuce wraps. It was also pretty tasty, but nowhere near as good as the first presentation.

The quality of the other dishes was also generally very high, though I found the crab had been kind of badly broken up such that it was hard to extract the crab meat from it. The winter melon was a big hit at the table, though I didn't love it as much as I did the spicy pork or the snow pea leaves.

Finally we had a kind of sweet potato soup with a particular kind of fungus for dessert. It was much less disgusting than it sounds and quite a nice end to the meal.

Thanks Jacquilynne, that's really good to know - my SO and I have been looking for a place that serves good Peking Duck without having to go across the city to Richmond Hill for example, so this is wonderful. Having been to Summit Garden several times we like their dim sum (priced higher than average but worth it), and of course their regular dinner dishes.

I've eaten at Summit many times for dinner and dim sum over the last few years and have found it generally quite good, but not really a destination restaurant (for me anyway). However, my most recent trip was a few weeks ago and I want to report on some particularly rude service.

My aunt is a regular and was recognized by the head waiter and several other members of the waitstaff. But one particular waiter was particularly obtrusive. We had some family photo albums, calendars and books we were flipping through and this waiter picked them up and started flipping through. He even had the nerve to ask where a particular photo was taken and who the people in the photo were! Needless to say, we were all taken aback. I regret not saying something to the waiter or a manager.

This has never happened to me before at Summit, but was definitely a turnoff.

Summit is pretty good - they have better than average dim sum as well.
