What's in season now in PDX?
About to make my fifth trip to Portland, but I think this is the first time I've ever been out there in June. What's particularly good now in the way of fresh produce? How about seafood? What should I be looking for?

It's been really cold lately, about 15 degrees below average, so everything is late.
The Hood strawberries for example, usually appearing end of May, still are not available at nearly all farms. Greens are still great such as kale etc, also mushrooms & morels. Make sure to check out the Portland Farmers' Market.
Cherries usually come around 6/20 but I've my doubts they will be on time. Besides, some of the crop was ruined by late freezes when the blossoms were on.
Dungeness crab is still in season!
Precisely when are you coming? That will make all the difference.

What I'm getting from my CSA is lots of lettuce, arugula, spring onions, green garlic, kale, chard, broccoli, and peas. They are promising fava beans pretty soon. Leonardo is right: everything is very late this year. You might have heard about the problems with the wild salmon harvest in Oregon. Even the salmon from Alaska like Copper River that's normally coming in right now is ridiculously expensive.

Had a great piece of salmon last week from Linda Brand Crab from the Hillsdale Farmers' Market (though they do almost all of the local markets). It was $17.99/lb (which is actually down from $19.99/lb that it was a week or two before) and yeah, that is still high! They also have been selling really good tiny shrimp, and some fantastic black cod (which is a heckuva lot cheaper than salmon, by almost half). Black cod is also on a lot of menus around town. I love it, it is really rich and a substantial fish. It is also called sablefish.
I have been loving the garlic ramps this season. Seriously yummy.
Hit a farmers' market while you are in town, Gonzocook, and you'll know what is in season.

I've been to Hillsdale and the big one at PSU. Tremendous markets. You Oregonians are so lucky.

At Hillsdale, the Indian guy at the pickup truck sells some really nice smoked salmon for $10 a piece. It's better priced, and I think it tastes better, than the Smokery in the main part of the market.

It is in the parking lot between Wilson HS and Rieke Elementary, behind the Hillsdale Shopping Center. It is held on Sundays 10am-2pm May-October and then every other week through the year.
It's a great smaller market and there is free parking at either end.
