Great margaritas, lunch, downtownish

I'll be downtown on Wednesday, (Geary and Sutter street art galleries) and am looking for a great margarita and good food, doesn't have to be Mexican. Its my birthday and a mid-day, mid-week drink is essential.
Thanks Chowers,

  1. I've had drinks and snacks at Colibri and they are pretty solid for the area. The guacamole, made tableside, is especially good. They have a good selection of tequila and use fresh ingredients, so I'd say give it a try. Happy Birthday!

    1. Colibri.

      1. stop by Cantina for your birthday cheer (it's a bar...)

Wonderful bar, but being a bar it's not open until early evening and there's no food.

        2. I haven't been in a while. but the Irish Bank was one of my standard post-shopping stop-offs. They made pretty good margaritas and a nice comfort bar food menu.

That said, I haven't been since Jacques (the margarita king) left but I'm sure they're still fine.

I went to the Irish Bank last night for the first time, and had two margaritas instead of the beer everyone else had. They were smallish instead of huge and I took that to be a good sign. But alas, I could taste no tequila (not saying there wasn't any in it, just that there wasn't enough for the flavor to come through) and after drinking two of them I couldn't tell I had had anything to drink. I don't know how many bartenders they have, but whoever made that one did a poor job.

          2. Two other suggestions for you:

            - Zazil (it's in the SF Centre, 4th floor I think). It's the from the same group as Colibri - and has great margaritas. There menu is much smaller and their prices higher, but the food is generally good.

            - Mexico DF, on Steuart Street near the Embarcadero; good simple menu, good drinks.
