Tyranny of the healthy??? Are you out of your mind? You mean the people who put Dominos and coke machines in public schools, contributing to massive obesity in children which also is contributing to alarming rates of childhood diabetes??? Have you not heard that the cost of obesity now outweighs (hee hee)(but seriously) the cost of smoking, nationally? I want to add that the idea of eating horses totally grosses me out, true, I don't eat cows, either but horses!!!! have faces and personalities. I wouldn't eat my dog either, or my grandmother, even if someone said humans are really tasty and you can get one in (insert some countries' name here- don't want to insult anyone)...

To be serious for a moment, California voters overwhelmingly passed Proposition 6 in 1998, which makes illegal the sale of horse meat for human consumption. Penal Code section 598d provides, "horsemeat may not be offered for sale for human consumption. No restaurant, cafe, or other public eating place may offer horsemeat for human consumption." First offense is punishable by a $1000 fine and/or 30 days-2 years, subsequent offenses by two to five years in state prison.

IMO I know I would never eat horse meat, it cannot be a healthy choice. I have horses and know what kind of chemicals are put in and on them. This has to be in the meat. Wormers to fly sprays all say on the package "do not use on horses intended for food". Not to mention the West Nile virus that is going around.
The USDA inspectors at the plants, I have been told can only inspect 9 out of 10 horses and they are only visually inspecting for West Nile. How can you visually test for West Nile? As of right now the EU has banned beef with hormones from the United States coming into the EU. I know hormones are given to horses especially to race horses. YUCK!!!!!

To be serious for another moment, horse meat is really fantastic. Friends of mine who have had it in europe only rave about its sweet meat, and I had a chance to sample some in Montreal. It's really that good. It's not just some kind of filler meat as others seem to imply on this thread, but I could understand why those in the US would want to protect the horse from consumption. For those who haven't tried it, I do recommend it when you see it on a menu in europe or canada.

I had it in Antwerp, years ago, as cold-cuts. I don't think I would have eaten it, but it was offered to me and a friend at a private home, and after we ate it they told us what it was. (I remember that it was good, but I no longer remember exactly what it tasted like. But, no, it didn't taste like chicken.)

I should also mention that the way it was recommended to me was to have a horsemeat steak. The meat is lean, yet tender and sweet. I was able to order filets covered in a sauce in a Montreal restaurant, and I got a good sense of the meat, but I await my next opportunity to get it in europe for a more optimal experience.

The anti-horsemeat initiative was pushed by horse lovers who simply find it shocking that people would eat horses--they also argued that it led to cruelty in the way horses are raised. The counterargument was that other cultures (including many who now live in California in large numbers in our wonderful multicultural era) see things differently. (You can still find a lot of literature about this election if you search the internet.) "If memory serves," the initiative passed about four to one, so the multiculti argument obviously didn't sway many voters.
