If you had to choose a restaurant for a special meal for a person in L.A. one evening where would it be? I do not want anything with very complicated food and expensive is fine but not insanely expensive (like Capo). I prefer Santa Monica, West Hollywood, Beverly Hills, Hollywood or Malibu. I am considering Providence, Craft or Mastros but I'm open to any suggestions. He wants to go someplace he's never been and has already been to:
The Ivy (and loved it)
Hotel Bel Air
BOA
Geoffreys
Citrus
Little Door
Pizzeria Mozza
Cut

If you can score a reservation, I'd definitely check out Osteria Mozza.

Comme Ca in WeHo, newly opened Anisette in Santa Monica and Fraiche in Culver City are also some nice options.

Providence is definitely delish, but the prices can go pretty high esp. if you're doing tasting menu (but then again, if he's already been to Cut....)

Josie in Santa Monica is also pretty nice.

Among your choices I'd avoid Craft -- it was very much underwhelming both times I've been there. And I love Mastro's, but for a special occasion I'd probably opt for Providence. If you're willing to go somewhere else not listed, my wife and I had our 5-year anniversary dinner at All' Angelo and absolutely loved it. We did the 5-course tasting menu with wine pairing and it was perfect.

I would also consider Ortolon. My finace and I went there for our 3 year anniversary and it was fantastic and very romantic. I'm also a fan of Providence, Citrus and Craft.

Providence. Don't hesitate to call Donato and make an appointment for the dinner, and tell him its a special occasion, get a chef's tasting menu. If you ask for the worst table in the house, I think you still get 10% off.

I go there once a year for a special dinner, and this year I took my sister for lunch for her birthday. It is divine.
